An upcoming chapter in The Book of Kin
The Lost Tribe is the story of a non-human swamp native who escapes from the rainforest because her tribe is reluctant to accept her albino baby. Frantic, with a crying baby in her arms, she stumbles upon a pop-up research facility.
The academics, intrigued by the species, take her back with them to urbanization for further studies or as a social experiment. She and her son attempt to assimilate into the western culture. Over the years, they both struggle with their identities and gradually drift apart when his intellect surpasses hers. When her son has reached adulthood, she leaves the life they have built behind and returns to the forest.
Her son then goes in search of her and discovers his roots. He comes face to face with his origin tribe, who on first instinct, want to attack him but the chief/leader (his grandfather) recognises him and welcomes him as part of the family. As a graphic novelist, the son ends up using his skills to overcome the language barrier by communicating with them through art.
After he departs back to the city, his experience inspires him to create a book in memory of his mother. The story ends with him returning to the tribe, bearing interesting trinkets from the city and showing them the book (which is the book the reader/audience is reading).
